Unsafe abortion is one of the common reason behind unnecessary death and disabilities globally Nepal being no exception. Under FIGO Initiative on Unsafe abortion, NESOG has successfully completed the first phase of the project- the situational analysis on Unsafe abortion in Nepal with support of key stakeholders FPAN, GHD (Govt of Nepal), UNFPA, TCIC/IPAS Nepal, CREHPA, Paropakar Maternity Hospital Thapathali, FWLD, MSI Nepal and SMNF. The national dissemination workshop was organized on 11 March 2008 where 75 participants participated in the program. This opportunity was also taken to develop plan of action based on situational analysis. The regional meeting of this initiative was held on august 2008 at Mumbai, India where eight countries of South Asia region participated in the meeting and Nepal team was congratulated as one of the best team for excellence. The second phase of this project “the implementation phase is currently on run. Dr Kusum Thapa, General Secretary NESOG (Aug 2009 in Dhaka), Dr. Aruna Karki, Co-Gen Secretary and focal person FIGO unsafe abortion (2010 Feb in Karachi) and Veena Shrivastava, President NESOG (June 2010 Colombo) represented at different Regional Workshop on Unsafe Abortion respectively in connection with this project. Implementation of activities has been included in the plan of action and presentation “Final action plan on reducing unsafe abortion in Nepal” was made at special FIGO session at the SOGP Conference in Karachi, Pakistan on February 2010.
Regional Workshop on FIGO Initiative for the Prevention of Unsafe Abortion
A two day Regional Workshop on the FIGO Initiative for the Prevention of Unsafe Abortion and its Complications was organized on 23- 24 July at Kathmandu that aimed to discuss the progress made in the plan of action of the 5 participating five countries, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Srilanka; to explore further avenues for collaboration with partner organizations in order to reduce mortality and morbidity from unsafe abortions. Prof Dr. Praveen Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal, inaugurated the workshop. Prof Dr Ashma Rana, President NESOG and focal point for FIGO Initiative for the Prevention of Unsafe Abortion gave welcome speech. Workshop Objectives was presented by Dr Shahida Zaidi, Regional Coordinator, South/South East Asia and Global Progress was delivered by Professor Anibal Faundes, Coordinator General, FIGO Initiative for the Prevention of Unsafe Abortion and its Complications. Final Remarks was given by Prof Dr. Praveen Mishra, Secretary of Health and Population, Government of Nepal after lighting Panas. Prof Dr Puspha Chaudhary gave the vote of thanks and master of inauguration programme ceremony was Chanda Shrivastava.
